In the 1930s and 1940s, farmers and ranchers fought uphill battles against market consolidation, dangerous work, and bad weather, with few services to help. North Dakota Farmers Union members came together to build marketing, supply, and electric coops. They also created the Farmers Union Insurance companies to provide risk services tailored to their needs.
In 1938, North Dakota Farmers Union (NDFU) formed Farmers Union Service Association, Ltd., (FUSA) an insurance agency providing insurance to its members. However, in the early 1940s, North Dakota farmers were having an increasingly difficult time securing property insurance, so members of NDFU raised capital to form Farmers Union Mutual Insurance Company (FUMIC ND). FUMIC ND was granted a certificate of authority by the North Dakota insurance department in 1944 to write property and casualty insurance.
In, 2018, FUMIC ND affiliated with Farmers Union Mutual Insurance Company domiciled in Arkansas (FUMIC AR), which has been in operation since January 1934. Its policyholders are voting members of FUMIC AR and are also members of Arkansas Farmers Union.
In 2020, FUMIC ND reorganized to form a mutual insurance holding company system. In doing so, it created Agraria Mutual Group (AMG). It also changed its name to Agraria Insurance Company, but does business in North Dakota as Farmers Union Insurance Company. Any policyholder of Agraria Insurance Company is a member of Agraria Mutual Group, with voting rights to elect the AMG board. Agraria Insurance Company policyholders are also members of North Dakota Farmers Union, South Dakota Farmers Union, or Utah Farmers Union, depending on their home state.
Agraria Mutual Group, through its subsidiary Agraria Insurance Company, delivers a wide variety of insurance products and services to farmers, ranchers, homeowners, and businesses in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Utah. FUMIC delivers products and services in Arkansas. Each company markets through FUSA, their exclusive general agency, which contracts with hundreds of agents in local communities across its territory.
In North Dakota, South Dakota, and Arkansas, FUSA markets the companies under its brand Farmers Union Insurance.
FUSA, AIC, and FUMIC are headquartered in Jamestown, ND, with satellite offices in Mandan, ND, and Bryant, AR.
