Distracted Driving | Dine and Drive

Why You Shouldn’t Dine and Drive

Jun 21, 2022

Driving is a task that requires your full attention. Any activity that sways the driver’s focus from the road should be eliminated because it causes accidents. While texting and driving are among the leading examples of distracted driving, eating and drinking also cause the same problem.

Eating and drinking while driving increase your chance of getting into an accident by 80%. Most of these accidents occur in the morning as people grab a quick bite before heading to work or school. In the event of an accident, you better be ready and have your liability insurance prepared.

What Type of Food and Drinks To Avoid

Eating while driving usually consists of a few distractions. A driver will usually unwrap the food, apply the condiments, and use a napkin to pick it up, all while using one hand to operate a vehicle. Doing all these makes eating very dangerous. On top of this, certain types of food can really sway a driver’s attention from the road. Here are a few of them below:

  • Hot Soup – Soup is not meant to be eaten in a car. It’s messy, especially while you’re driving. Eat it in a restaurant or at home.
  • Fried Chicken – Fried chicken is a greasy type of food. Eating it while driving will cause the steering wheel to be oily, making it slippery and hard to maneuver. Eat it while in the parking lot or a restaurant.
  • Tacos – Tacos are hard to eat, even in a restaurant. So why will you eat them in your car? They’ll only cause a mess as the ingredients fall out of the shell.

How Can We Prevent These Accidents?

Operating a vehicle is a dangerous task on its own. So why would you put yourself in more jeopardy and try to multitask while you’re behind the wheel? Activities like eating and texting should be avoided as these activities divide a driver’s attention while on the road.

To avoid these, one thing we can do is to eat before leaving the house. This will give you the fuel to start your day and skip that drive-through on your way to work. Another thing you can do is to not eat in your car. By doing this, you won’t be tempted to eat, and it will keep your car from getting messy.

Always Think About You and Your Passengers’ Safety

People should never forget that when it comes to driving, you should always be prepared for the things that might happen while you’re on the road. That’s why all forms of distraction should be avoided or minimized.
