Essential Insurance Coverage to Consider for Rural Living

Finding the right insurance policy may not sound like everyone’s idea of a good time, but there’s nothing quite like the peace of mind you can get when you purchase the right coverage. Not all policies are the same, though, and oftentimes the coverage you need depends largely on where you live. If you live in small town America or a predominantly agricultural region, you’ll need something more than what metropolitan residents are getting.

So what do you need to know about purchasing insurance? Here are three things to consider about the following policies if you live in a rural area:

Farmers Insurance

The vast majority of the 2.2 million farms in the U.S. are located in more remote areas in order to give farmers enough land to run their businesses. In fact, about 97% of those farms are run by families, so these aren’t just a livelihood — it’s also a homestead. Farmers insurance is designed to cover a variety of scenarios, such as coverage for crop loss. These policies also help protect your home and agricultural facilities, so you can continue to make a living and have a roof over your head.

Car Insurance

While some small town residents may not drive their cars very far, others may need to travel further for work or recreation. This not only puts more wear and tear on a car, but it could mean additional coverage just in case of disaster. However, that doesn’t mean you’ll see a huge hike in your car insurance rates. For the most part, these premiums are calculated based on a number of factors, like your driving record and the type of vehicle you own. Age also plays a role — if you or another driver in your home is under 25 or over 70 years old, you may pay a different amount for coverage.

Health Insurance

Health insurance is a necessity for just about everyone these days. However, if you live in a rural area, getting the care you need may be easier said than done. Sometimes the nearest hospital could be several miles away, and even a trip to the doctor’s office could involve traveling to another county. Good health insurance plans should give you the choices you need so you have access to the best and nearest care possible.

The level of care you need may also factor into your decisions about your health insurance plans. For instance, if you are on Medicare, you may need to find supplemental insurance to fill in the gaps in your coverage. In this case, you’ll need to find a healthcare provider who will also include the option for Medicare supplements if you already have coverage. Medicare supplements help to pay for what this government program might not offer, so you have access to all of the care you need — not just some of it.

Whether you require Medicare supplements or need protection for your farm and home, make sure to speak with an insurance agent to find something that is right for you.
