Gasoline Storage: A Volatile Issue

Sep 11, 2014

As summer approaches, more and more portable gasoline containers are filled for use with yard equipment. Gasoline powered engines are everywhere, but never forget the volatile, highly explosive qualities of gasoline.

Remember, THERE IS NO COMPLETELY SAFE WAY TO STORE GASOLINE, and small mistakes can have catastrophic consequences.

  • Never store gas in non-approved containers. Do not use plastic jugs or glass
  • containers even briefly.
  • Use gasoline as a motor fuel only; it is extremely dangerous as a cleaning solvent.
  • Never bring gasoline inside the house. Volatile vapors are heavier than air and can flow along the floor to ignition sources such as pilot lights.
  • Store gasoline in the garage; better still in a well-ventilated shed away from the house.
  • Use gasoline only in well-ventilated areas, preferably outdoors.
  • Keep stored gasoline at the very minimum needed.

Gasoline is dangerous and volatile and can be extremely destructive. Treat this explosive substance with the extreme care it requires.
